This zine brings together photographs made over two and a half months documenting the closure of Beauty Plus, a Black-owned beauty supply store in New Haven, Connecticut that served its community for 31 years. Shot on a 4x5 film camera, the images preserve the textures and atmosphere of a space central to Black beauty, culture, and community.
Alongside the photographs are interviews with Mel, the store’s owner, who was part of New Haven’s first Black-owned beauty supply store, Unique Boutique, before opening Beauty Plus. With over 55 years in the beauty industry, Mel reflects on her history, legacy, and the role of beauty supply stores as vital cultural institutions.
This zine offers both a visual and narrative record of a beloved local institution and its lasting impact. All zines are hand-signed by the artist.
