Inspired by the layered posters that once lined the walls of Beauty Plus—a 31-year-old Black-owned beauty supply in New Haven—Motions reflects the resourcefulness and resilience of these community spaces. Owner Mel covered the shop’s worn walls with beauty brand advertisements featuring R&B icons, turning what was broken into something affirming and beautiful. Brands like Motions, Harlem 125, and Posner, though not Black-owned, carved space in a market that had long excluded Black women, offering products that shaped evolving rituals of care and self-expression. At the same time, their presence underscores the complicated economics of Black beauty, where cultural identity is affirmed but often monetized by those outside the community.
With the Motions limited edition scarf, Jasmine Ross translates that history into wearable art. Bridging gallery and garment, the piece pays tribute to neighborhood businesses that sustain Black beauty culture, while also extending Ross’s love of fashion into the luxury sector—making art accessible beyond the frame.
