From now through January 1st, I'm collaborating with two Bay Area nonprofits whose missions deeply align with the values behind this work. Arts for Oakland Kids advocates for equitable access to arts education in Oakland's public schools, while Blue Heart funds and elevates the stories and solutions of under-the-radar grassroots organizations working on the frontlines of social change.
50% of the proceeds from this limited-edition print will benefit these two organizations.
About the Image:
First exhibited at the Museum of the African Diaspora, “How We See You” is a diptych that fundamentally shaped my photographic practice. Months before documenting the closure of Beauty Plus, I photographed Mel cleaning her storefront windows without her permission, only returning once I learned of the shop’s impending closure to gift her a print, and thank her for her work as a community pillar in New Haven for over 31 years. This exchange began a three-month relationship documenting her life’s work and marked a turning point in my practice, challenging me to confront the ethics of photographing without consent while reaffirming the power of making visible what might otherwise go unseen through an approach grounded in care and mutual exchange.
I hope this piece resonates with you and that you'll consider supporting this initiative during the holiday season.
Warmly,
Jasmine <3
