For the month of November, I'm collaborating with two Bay Area nonprofit organizations whose missions deeply align with the values behind this work. Arts for Oakland Kids advocates for equitable access to arts education in Oakland's public schools, while Blue Heart funds and elevates the stories and solutions of under-the-radar grassroots organizations working on the frontlines of social change.
50% of the proceeds from this limited-edition print sale will benefit these two organizations.
Through this collaboration, I hope to extend the spirit of the photograph beyond the image itself, supporting opportunities for youth to feel seen and supported by giving them the space to cultivate their curiosity, and imagine futures on their own terms.
About the Image:
This work is an ode to my younger self as an independent thinker. Here, the little girl in blue is grimacing, smelling the incense she hasn't bought yet while her sister and family friends shop above her. Unable to sit still for the image, the viewer is left with her motion blur. To some, this may have been characterized as disobedience or the child's inability to listen carefully, reflecting how too often Black girls are criticized for being children, beating to their own drum and exploring the world on their own terms. Ironically, the very qualities we celebrate in adulthood like independence, curiosity, and self-assurance, are often the ones reprimanded in childhood. This image seeks to challenge that narrative, reframing what might be perceived as defiance as an early expression of individuality, being unconventional, and giving young Black girls the grace to act their own age.
I hope this piece resonates with you and that you'll consider supporting this initiative during the holiday season.
Warmly,
Jasmine <3
